Scope: Environmental Audit (EA) for a Grey Cement Production Facility and Associated Quarries in Chekka, Lebanon

MORES was commissioned to conduct an Environmental Audit (EA) study for a grey cement production facility in Chekka, as per the requirements of the Ministry of Environment (MoE) of Lebanon.

Holcim is one of the three main grey cement producers in Lebanon with a nominal capacity exceeding 2,300,000 tons of cement per year. Its production facilities are located in the Chekka area, Northern Lebanon, while its offices are located in Antelias and Heri. In 2015, Holcim and Lafarge completed a global merger to launch Lafarge Holcim, a world leader in the building materials industry.

This EA focuses on the key environmental areas, namely air, waste, water and energy. The issues covered by this study include environmental management practices, cement production, air quality and gaseous emissions, water consumption, solid waste generation, wastewater generation, energy efficiency, noise pollution, and Health and Safety (H&S).

Description of Provided Services

  • Site inspection and field work;
  • Documentation, auditing and reporting including environmental management practices and production processes;
  • Gathering relevant data and analyzing operational units (input, output and consumption of raw materials)
  • Monitoring of ambient and operational noise levels;
  • Assessment of power requirements, energy consumption, and electricity and heat generation;
  • Development of a Compliance Action Plan (CAP) / Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for performance improvement and monitoring and recommendations to minimize impact on the environment;
  • Environmental areas covered by this study include: air quality, water treatment and consumption, wastewater generation and treatment, solid waste generation, noise pollution, energy consumption, and health and safety.
