Solid Waste Management

Beirut Central District, Beirut, Lebanon
Improved Solid Waste Collection System

Client: The Lebanese Company for the Development and Reconstruction of Beirut (SOLIDERE)
Start Date: December 2003
Completion Date: January 2004\

Project Description:
The project aims at implementing a solid waste management plan for the Beirut Central District (BCD) that: 1) allows for the progressive development of the area; 2) can be easily adopted by the generators (residential or non-residential – offices, commercial enterprises, government institutions, etc…) and service providers, (public or private) alike; and 3) precludes, to the extent feasible, the use of curbside waste containers.

The thought-after plan for the effective storage and collection of solid waste within the BCD would account for the developmental needs of all Sectors within the BCD, can be readily introduced at the present, is flexible, and can accommodate modifications to address the future needs of the area as it develops, including variations in land use and zoning.

Services:
Preparation of the tender documents for the study to improve the solid waste collection system in two consecutive phases: Phase one, improve the current and future solid waste management (storage and collection) within three “hot spot”; and Phase two, implement a similar management scheme that encompasses the remainder of the Beirut Central District or develop the ‘Phase one’ plan further to account for full occupancy of the developed sites within the “hot-spot” areas.

Works included the identification of current situation with respect to waste generation, handling, storage and collection, development plans for SOLIDERE, presentation of needs and constraints and development of conceptual programs, expected outcomes from the study (maps, size of containers, volumes, dimensions, analysis of alternative collection systems, analysis of incurred costs, analysis of collection frequency, etc). The works also included the setting of an action plan and recommendations for implementing the proposed study.
