Project Description:
The project was elaborated in
association with Khatib & Alami through the preparation of an
EIA report for the management and treatment of infectious
medical waste generated at Clemenceau Medical Center. The
technology used to treat infectious waste is
microwave/autoclave with a supplementary shredder unit. The
project of the development of Hospital Waste Management
System: internal waste handling (segregation, collection,
packaging and labeling, storage and transportation), and waste
handling during treatment (material balance, operating
procedures of the machine, cost issues and personnel
requirement), and completion of the EIA.
Services:
The EIA report
addressed: definition of legal and administrative laws related
to healthcare facilities and waste management;
environmental
conditions pertaining to physical, biological and
socio-economic indicators related to the project area;
environmental Impacts; treatment alternatives/processes
technologies; development and recommendation of mitigation
measures to limit potentially negative impacts; and subsequent
mitigation measures, environmental monitoring and management
plans to minimize the impacts during operation of the
microwave.
The EIA also
analysed the implementation of training programs for CMC
staff to ensure appropriate environmental awareness,
knowledge and skills on principles of hospital waste
management, pollution health impacts and prevention
measures, risks associated with handling of healthcare
waste, and operating procedures: emergency response,
spillage, and personal protective equipment.
